Evan led in more ways than one today, Sunday, Feb. 27, during our balmy 72-degree weather run.
He is usually physically ahead of me but he taught me more than I ever wanted to know about Pokemon Black and Gold (it really did make sense at the time). But I also learned that he can teach and that he is thinking about his future.
At nine years old, Evan is trying to decide if he wants to be an architect or a teacher! We passed some men working on the roof of a house and I asked if he would like doing that (I wouldn't) or drawing the plans for the house, as in architect. He said he would like to do both but is thinking about being a teacher: "I just got into that, mom. Which do you think I should teach - kindergarten or first grade?"
I suggested kindergarten because it sounded more fun but that he could ask his grandmother because she has taught both grades. His response: "Uh, I know, mom, but I don't need to. I was thinking first grade because you get to learn numbers, your name and how to tell time."
So Gmommy's advice is out, at least this time, but here comes the next question: "How do you keep track of what they learn?"
I'm obviously thinking something simple (we ARE running, remember), like his agenda I sign nightly and his teacher's weekly newsletter but that isn't what he means at all. After a couple of questions, I had to think hard while running as I briefly explained the Department of Public Instruction and what its role is for public school students. And then the light bulb, or in our case, the cloud cleared for Evan. He is ready to teach! :)
So despite my headache which did go away after the run, a bouncing ball and several distractions including Evan tying his shoes THREE times, we did well:
Time: 30:55
Distance: 1.59 miles
Calories: 98.4
Steps: 3787
Pace: 0.3 (average is 3.1)
I bet our pace was slower than usual because of my headache and our "deep" conversation.
Happy Running!
